Denture Cleaning

Definition

Dentures are artificial teeth set into a base that fits into the mouth.

Description

CLEANING COMPLETE DENTURES

  • Dentures should be brushed over a towel or a sink half-filled with water in case they are dropped. Lightly brush the dentures with a soft nylon toothbrush or denture brush.
  • Place dentures in a cleanser overnight or for at least 30 minutes daily. This will help to remove stains and help prevent mouth infections and mouth odours. After the dentures have been soaked remove all the cleanser by lightly brushing the dentures under cold running water.
  • Massage the gums with a soft toothbrush for one minute once a day.
  • See your Dentist if you find sore red areas, white patches, growths or if you experience burning sensations.
  • See your Dentist regularly so your mouth can be checked and to check that the dentures fit correctly.

CLEANING PARTIAL DENTURES OR FULL DENTURES WITH METAL PARTS

  • Follow the instructions above for cleaning complete dentures, but do not soak partial dentures in bleach, as it will corrode the framework. There are products available for cleaning partial dentures or full dentures with metal parts.
  • Make sure you gently clean the clasp area that lays against the tooth for support.
  • Keep your mouth extra clean to help preserve your non-denture teeth and your gums.

CLEANING DENTURES WITH SOFT PROCESSED LINING

  • Soak dentures in a cleaner designed for dentures with soft processed lining overnight or for at least 30 minutes daily.
  • Scrub the soft material vigorously with a denture brush. Use a soft nylon toothbrush and gently brush the other surfaces.
  • If the surface or soft lining begins to deteriorate, see your Dentist. The lining generally lasts 3-4 years.

OLD DENTURES

  • Brush and rinse dentures thoroughly.
  • Soak overnight in cleaning solution.
  • Brush and rinse dentures in the morning.
  • Allow dentures to dry completely before storing them in a dry place.
  • The mouth will change if the dentures are not regularly worn and the dentures may not fit over time.
