Blackmores Milk Thistle protects the liver cells through its strong antioxidant activity. Traditionally used as a detoxifying agent, it supports regeneration of liver cells and protects against potentially harmful substances such as alcohol.
Milk Thistle has a protective effect on cell membranes due to its strong antioxidant and free radical scavenging action. It assists in detoxification processes in the liver by increasing the activity of super oxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and by conserving reduced glutathione. Research has endorsed the use of Milk Thistle in the treatment of liver intoxication, however it is more commonly indicated to relieve symptoms of sluggish digestive or liver function (for example inability to digest fats or alcohol).
The main active constituents of Milk Thistle are a complex of flavanolignans which are collectively known as silymarin, and include silybin, silydianin and silychristin. Silymarin stimulates manufacture of protein in the liver, resulting in an increased production and regeneration of new liver cells replacing old and damaged cells.
