Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (copd)

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects one in seven people over the age of 40 in Australia.

COPD is a progressive condition that limits airflow into the lungs. It is a term used for chronic lung diseases that include bronchitis, emphysema and asthma. Unfortunately COPD cannot be cured but there are things that you can do to slow the progression and improve symptoms.

Symptoms of COPD include; coughing, a build-up of phlegm or feeling puffed or short of breath when climbing stairs or walking up a hill. Under-diagnosis of COPD is a major issue with up to 80% of people with undiagnosed COPD mistaking their symptoms for another condition. Visit your local Wizard Pharmacy today and find out more about COPD screening.

What is COPD Screening about?

If you are over 35 years with no previous diagnosis of COPD and answer ‘yes’ to one of the following questions you may be suitable for a COPD screening;

Do you

  • cough up mucus, phlegm or blood?
  • get out of breath more easily than others your age?
  • experience chest tightness or wheeze?
  • have frequent chest infections?
  • experience chest pain, fatigue, or have sudden weight loss?
  • smoke or are you an ex-smoker?

What will I get?

COPD screening devices are painless and easy to use. During the screening, you blow into a small Airsmart Spirometry device that connects to an iPhone or iPad. The device will detect people at risk of COPD before disease progression becomes significant. Our Pharmacist will then refer you to your Doctor if required.

If you have already been diagnosed by your Doctor with COPD then our Pharmacist can check if you have an up to date COPD action plan. They can also advise you on how to use your inhaler/s correctly. Incorrect use or difficulty in using inhaled medicines may result in medicines being less effective. Talk with our Pharmacist if you are having difficulties using your inhaler.

How much will it cost?

This service costs $5.

Can I do it?

Anyone over 35 with no previous diagnosis of COPD can complete the lung health questionnaire. Eligible patients will then be offered a COPD screening. Visit a Wizard Pharmacy for more information.
