Diabetes Management

Did you know that 280 Australians develop diabetes every day? Diabetes is Australia’s fastest growing chronic condition. Untreated diabetes increases your risk for many other health problems including heart attack, stroke, poor circulation, eye problems, kidney failure, gum disease and foot problems. Being diagnosed with diabetes can be overwhelming but you are not alone. With the help and support from your local Wizard Pharmacy, you can learn to manage your condition and significantly reduce your risk of developing the serious health problems associated with diabetes. Book a diabetes check-up today and let us help you manage your diabetes better.

What is Diabetes Management about?

When you eat, your body turns the food into a sugar called glucose. Your body also creates a hormone called insulin which is essential for the conversion of this glucose into energy. Diabetes is a condition in which your body cannot use all of the glucose because it cannot produce insulin or the insulin you make is not enough. The glucose then builds up in your blood causing high blood glucose levels.

There are two main types of diabetes. Type 1 is less common and is when your body is unable to produce enough insulin. Type 2 represents 85-90% of cases and is when your body cannot use the insulin it produces. Type 2 diabetes is often referred to as a lifestyle disease.

Regular monitoring of your blood glucose plays an important role in the management of your diabetes. There are two types of tests that together provide a whole picture of your blood glucose levels. Self-blood glucose monitoring gives you an immediate reading and measures your blood glucose levels at that point in time. The HbA1c test shows your average blood glucose levels over the last three months which can give you a better indication of your risk of developing long term complications.

At a diabetes check-up we can test your blood glucose levels and if necessary also test your HbA1c.

What will I get?

Wizard Pharmacists are able to counsel and monitor certain aspects of diabetes. At a Diabetes Management check-up we will:

  • test your blood glucose levels and explain your results

  • test your HbA1c in store and provide results in 10 minutes (additional fees apply)

  • provide counselling on prevention strategies and lifestyle tips such as eating habits and exercise

  • provide advice on diabetic foot care and wound care

  • answer your questions about your medications

  • identify any problems you may have with your medicines including side effects

  • increase your knowledge about your diabetes management.

All Wizard Pharmacies are NDSS (National Diabetes Services Scheme) agents for Diabetes Australia and we stock a comprehensive range of needles, lancets and testing strips. We also stock a range of blood glucose monitors for home monitoring and our Pharmacists are trained to demonstrate how to use these devices correctly.

How much will it cost?

This service costs $5.

The HbA1c test costs an additional $60.

Can I do it?

Anyone who wants to know more about diabetes and learn about managing their condition better can do it.

Even if you have never had your blood glucose levels tested and have not been diagnosed as diabetic, you can have the test done. The test won’t tell you that you have diabetes - a high blood glucose reading from this test only indicates that there may be an issue and we will refer you to your Doctor if needed.

Where can I get it?

No appointments are necessary unless a HbA1c test is required.
