What is Sleep Apnoea Management about?

Sleep Apnoea is a common condition in which you have one or more pauses in breathing or shallow breaths while you sleep. The pauses in breathing can last from a few seconds to minutes and often occur 5 to 30 times an hour. Normal breathing will usually start again with a loud snort or choking sound. Constantly moving into and out of deep sleep results in poor sleep quality making you tired during the day.

Sleep Apnoea can be diagnosed with an overnight sleep test known as a sleep study. The sleep study will measure your sleep, breathing and oxygen levels. If you do have Sleep Apnea then a breathing device called a CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machine is commonly used to help treat your condition. A CPAP machine uses a mask that fits over your mouth and/or nose and gently blows air into your throat.

Visit us if you would like to know more about Sleep Apnoea Management and the solutions that are available.

What will I get?

At your initial appointment, we will ask you to complete a sleepiness quiz to determine whether you are at risk of Sleep Apnoea. If your score indicates potential risk then we will offer you the diagnostic overnight sleep study which can be performed in the comfort of your own home.

Your Wizard Pharmacist will provide all the necessary information and instructions on how to use the screening device to perform the overnight sleep study. When you return the device to us, we will upload and send your data to a Sleep Practitioner for analysis. Once your results are returned to us we will contact you to explain them and if you are diagnosed with sleep apnoea we will advise you on your treatment options.

Wizard Pharmacy offers a hire and trial service of CPAP machines so you can see if the therapy is beneficial for you. At the end of your trial, we can provide a range of CPAP machines for purchase.

How much will it cost?

What else do I need to know?

Sleep hygiene refers to habits that help you have a good night’s sleep. Some habits that can help you to improve your sleep quality include:

  • waking up at the same time each day

  • don’t go to bed if you don’t feel tired, if you are not asleep after 20 minutes, get out of bed and go to another room until you are tired enough to sleep

  • don’t smoke, drink alcohol or caffeine before bed as they stimulate your body making it harder to go to sleep

  • don’t eat a large meal just before bed, try to eat a few hours before bed

  • don’t exercise right before bed, exercise helps promote restful sleep if it is done a few hours before you go to bed

  • ensure your bedroom is quiet and dark enough to provide a sleep inducing environment

  • don’t have distractions in the bedroom such as TVs or computers

  • get enough sunlight during the day, when the sun sets your brain releases hormones to help make you sleepy.
